PETER BAGGE to Appear at Locust Moon

WOMANREBELtour (1)WEB-locustmoon
On Tuesday, October 22nd at 7:00pm, join Locust Moon and Drawn & Quarterly for an evening with cartoonist Peter Bagge to celebrate the launch of Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story, a dazzling, accessible biography of the activist, educator, nurse, mother, and protofeminist who founded Planned Parenthood. Bagge will be presenting a slideshow focusing on Sanger’s social and political activism and how Woman Rebel came together, sharing original sample pages from his book.

Woman Rebel presents the life of the outspoken, driven Margaret Sanger from her birth in the late nineteenth century to her death after the invention of the birth control pill. Balancing humor and respect, Bagge makes Sanger whole and human, showing how her flaws fueled her fiery activism just as much as her compassionate nature did. Sanger’s legacy is still incredibly relevant, important, and inspiring.

You can RSVP to the event on Facebook.

McCay-Book-788x1024

Some beautiful McCay illustrations & book design from a little-known Hearst-published propaganda book. 1929.

McCay-1-1024x666

The full, glorious wrap-around cover.

McCay003-1024x673 McCay010-1024x670

McCay was working in his standard Herald editorial-illustration style, which leads me to assume this book was authored by Arthur Brisbane.McCay015-1024x606The book also features cartoonier illustrations from Hearst cartoonist and friend of McCay, F. Opper.

THIS WEEK’S ROUND-UP IS A TOUCH SPOILER-Y, BE WARNED!

society is nix : sunday press continues to unearth and preserve the comic strips that laid the foundation for an art form and to present them in the grand fashion the material so richly deserves. chris ware said it pretty well: this is a mind-blowing portable museum retrospective of the raw, tangled ferocity and frustration that went into the making of America.

Image

justice league #23 : i’m a sucker for the crime syndicate. blame it on wolfman & perez and reading crisis on infinite earths when i was 9.

Image

Image

think tank #9 : a new arc begins in this smart military/science/political romp.

Image

konga : steve ditko’s entire run, 300 pages, on this b-movie blast of a riff on king kong. goofy as shit and gloriously drawn, this is a gorgeous book.
