40. AURORA WEST
Yeah, there’s a bit of a wait. We’ll be standing in line over here.
39. DEADLY CLASS
Between BLACK SCIENCE and DEADLY CLASS, Rick Remember is on a roll, launching wild new mythologies at what looks like the speed of thought. His tantalizing story is perfectly matched by Wes Craig’s stellar art, and we can’t wait to see where this one takes us.
38. THE LIFE AND TIMES OF AN ELDERLY SUPERHERO
These richly detailed oil paintings detailing the adventures of a hero who we have dubbed GRANDPAMAN are surreally funny and a little bit heartbreaking.
37. SUPERZELDA
With the manic, propulsive energy of a Gatsbian lawn party, this beautiful two-color bio details the graphic life of a fascinating woman whose story too often gets folded into her husband’s.
36. THE SAVIORS
James Robinson’s low-key sci-fi-stoner shaggy dog story is presented in J. Bone’s enviably crisp, energetic black & white.
35. This Optical Illusion
Does this work in person?? If so we need a flock of these beasties for the store.
Because two fans demanded it — and then made it themselves! All-New Marvel Now!
33. Harmon’s COMMUNITY
The magic’s back, the gas leak is fixed, and Troy gets a well-deserved, hilarious, tearjerker of a send-off.
32. RICK AND MORTY
It seems Harmon & co. are on a roll, because this one’s gotten better with every single episode. Just watch out for Cronenbergs.
The inimitable Andrea Tsurumi & Maëlle Doliveux are bringing sexy back, one day at a time.
30. This NARRATIVELY Piece by Julia Wertz
We were saddened to hear about Julia Wertz’s truly scary struggles with addiction and depression. But her mixed-media piece on Narratively is soulful, good-hearted, open and redemptive. She’s taking what sounds like a much-needed break from cartooning, but a voice as gifted and vital as hers can’t stay silent for long.
29. STAGE OF MIND Photos by Jee Young Lee
These rapturously fantastical, otherworldly photos were all created in one room, with a minimum of tools. Gorgeous and inspiring DIY dream-making.
28. Comics Academies
Paris is getting its own, and we are jealous as hell. Meanwhile, we’ll just keep doing what we can for these kids here in Philly.
27. THE EARFARMER
We’re starting to see layouts and scripts for this upcoming DARK HORSE PRESENTS story from the dynamic duo, the poetic pair, Farel Dalrymple & Chris Stevens…
26. MINIMUM WAGE
Bob Fingerman’s much-loved semi-auto-bio series is back and better than ever. Let’s see how Rob screws up his life this time.
Let’s keep it between us, but Andrew’s birthday is coming up…
24. Bleeding Cool’s Coverage of LITTLE NEMO: DREAM ANOTHER DREAM
The beautiful people over at BLEEDING COOL are excited about our Little Nemo tribute, and we can’t blame them.
23. WEIRDO YEARS
Robert Crumb’s mid-period wildness. It was his magazine, he could do whatever he wanted, and you can be damn sure he did.
22. TIME
If you’ve ever wondered what a rotting muppet corpse looks like, this is the video for you, you sick fuck.
21. RAGE OF POSEIDON
This baffling, utterly unique art-object of a book (it’s actually one accordion-folded print that’s probably fifty feet long) explores in stark silhouette the mundane side of the Greek pantheon. Anders Nilsen never stops surprising us.
20. Talking about THE IRON GIANT and SUPERMAN
Is Brad Bird’s first masterpiece the “best Superman movie” or the “best movie about what something like Superman can mean for people”? Perhaps both?
19. SWAMP THING
This stellar, never-before-collected SWAMP THING series by Brian K. Vaughan and Roger Petersen came out in a snazzy new volume from Vertigo, and we rambled about how much we liked it.
18. PRETTY DEADLY
Just four issues in and this series has us riveted and, at times, wondering just what the hell is going on. But with Emma Rios raising her game to the highest level and Kelly Sue Deconnick weaving in and out of fairy tale myth and old west vengeance, this book is simply captivating.
17. Unbreakable
The Sugar Bear AKA Chris Casino was hit by a car on a Monday and back with a smile on Wednesday. We might have to start calling him the Gummy Bear.
16. Keren Katz’s New Book
Keren Katz makes emotionally delicate, psychologically rich, rapturously colorful comics. Her newest book, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR COAT CHECK DREAM, is available from Domino books. We are lucky enough to be publishing one of her comics in…
15. QUARTER MOON 3: THE END OF THE NIGHT
Our erotica-themed iteration of our periodical comics magazine is off to the printers. It’s the best one yet, a lustful, yearning, perverted chaos of brilliant cartooning and illustration. This wild & beautiful book will debut on Valentine’s Weekend. Get in the mood.
14. BROKEN AGE
Double Fine’s groundbreaking Kickstarter victory has finally borne fruit, and boy is it delicious — and beautiful. I’d be lying, though, if I said the game’s charming story has grabbed me as much as that of the consistently fascinating, ongoing documentary on what’s been happening behind the scenes.
13. THE WRENCHIES Cover
First Second unveiled the gorgeous, kinetic cover to what is hands-down bar-none our most anticipated book of 2014.
12. Image Expo
Between locking Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker into an exclusive “we get to do whatever comics we want HAHAHA” contract, announcing 47 ambitious new comics, magazine and anthologies by Brandon Graham, and unveiling the new team-up between Matt Fraction and Michael Chabon (?!) on CASANOVA, Image continues steamrolling everything in the industry with new levels of awesome.
11. Locust Moon Comics Festival: Dated for 2014
Because we want those calendars marked and those plane/train/dirigible tickets booked. TO PHILADELPHIA! Saturday, October 25, 2014.
10. Peyton Manning
With Super Bowl Sunday just days away, we tip our caps to the great Peyton Manning. Root for him or against him, Manning is one of the greatest football players of all time and the chance to see him play in another Super Bowl at age 37 and after 4 neck surgeries that almost ended his career is a special thing for sports fans.
9. The Allreds
Between the almost-too-appropriate family-effort that was FF, a tease of that incredibly fun-looking SILVER SURFER series, and one of the best, most visually and emotionally stunning pages for LITTLE NEMO: DREAM ANOTHER DREAM, Mike, Laura, and Lee Allred pretty much made our January.
8. TRUE DETECTIVE
With an A-list cast and a deep, novelistic approach to storytelling that has been the hallmark of all great TV dramas since THE SOPRANOS, this certainly feels like the best new show on television.
7. The PLANETARY Omnibus
Warren Ellis and John Cassaday’s early 21st century opus was one of the sharpest, best-looking books anytime it appeared on the stands during its on-again, off-again, 10-year publishing history. Here it is in one over-sized volume that really allows Cassaday’s height-of-his-game artwork shine.
6. Rob Woods’ GOFUNDME Campaign
Our great friend and constant inspiration Rob Woods has found a new gear, pumping out pages for four new book projects slated for 2014. Please consider donating to help fund the Ramen noodles, Newports and art supplies that fuel this mighty machine.
5. SIX SEXY SEX STORIES OF THE SEXUALLY DEPRAVED
Rob’s newest creation is a primal scream of sexual frustration and ecstasy, a work of intense eroticism, and a fertile ground for psychoanalysis. Approach with caution. (And find a taste in February’s QUARTER MOON.)
4. UNWRITTEN
The latest installment in the richest and most ambitious comic series to come out of Vertigo in years, UNWRITTEN: APOCALYPSE kicks off what’s sure to be a table-turning meta-literary head-trip of a denouement. Gross & Carey have built this house of cards with an astonishing amount of patience, and we can’t wait to see them knock the whole thing down.
3. JUDGE DREDD: MEGA CITY TWO
Ulises Farinas is the hardest-working man in show business, and his Judge Dredd series with Douglas Wolk is a career-defining statement of purpose. We haven’t seen world-building this detailed or artwork this hyper-ridiculously joyful since Geof Darrow was working with Frank Miller. A pre-adolescent gosh-golly sense of comic book wonder + an enormous talent + an endless, indomitable, I’m-gonna-draw-eight-billion-lines-per-page work ethic = pure magic.
2. MIRACLEMAN
This is, quite simply, one of the greatest comic book series of all time. And now, after three decades in lawsuit limbo, it’s back. KIMOTA!
1. Snow
Just kidding, fuck snow.
great list as usual. glad you guys do this.
